Favorite Things #16 – Shadows

• Because I loved Peter Pan’s adventurous shadow
• Because it’s fun to check out your shadow on a hot summer day
• Because it’s fun to make shadow animal figures with your hands / fingers
• Because you can tell time (approximately!)
• Because I used to pretend my shadow was my imaginary friend
• Because shadows can also be scary fun! especially at night

Favorite Thing #15 – Big Empty Box

• Because it was the best toy EVER when I was a child
• Because the only limitation to what you could do with it was your imagination
• Because there is a lifetime of memories spent playing house, driving a battle tank/ambulance/firetruck… the list goes on endlessly
• Because it never cost anybody a cent
• Because after you got tired playing, you could just unfold it and press it down to a neat square to pack away
• Because those boxes now contain my other memories of childhood – books, toys, blankies…
• Because some things are PRICELESS

Favorite Thing #14 – Tweezers

• Because the unibrow look is NOT good for anyone
• Because a clean eyebrow line brightens up the eyes (as much as eyeliner and eyelash curlers)
• Because I hate hair on my head/face except if its on my scalp
• Because tweezers are good for other things too – like wood splinters anyone?
• Because I’m sure there’s an entire science and physics involved in making the best tweezers – how else to explain the expensive ones?
• Because you can’t use your fingers for everything – ewww
• Because they are SHINY and I like shiny things 😉

Favorite Thing #13 – Universal TV Remote

• Because like a lot of things in life, you don’t realize how much you need something until you lose it
• Because life got very very difficult when my original TV remote stopped working and I realized I was facing a future of manually changing channels
• Because I realized that I didn’t even know how to change channels without a remote
• Because it was like a miracle from heaven when I was told that universal remotes that work with any brand of TV exists!
• Because I never felt so dumb as when I was trying to program the remote to recognize my TV’s wavelength or some such
• Because I never felt so smart as when I finally got it to work!
• Because I promise solemnly to always have fresh batteries for it 😉

Favorite Thing #12 – Seashell

• Because I remember the first time I ever put a seashell up to my ear and I wondered how God had saved a little bit of the sea inside the shell (I was very young, ok?)
• Because I have seen that exact wonderment when I offered seashells for my nieces and nephews to listen to and it never gets old
• Because it’s fun to look for seashells on the beach
• Because each seashell I have brought home is a repository for a story and a memory – the special person I was with, solitary or romantic or fun walks on the beach…
• Because they are beautiful, natural works of art
• Because like people, they come in all colors, shapes and sizes
• Because mollusks sure beat us humans when it comes to having a beautiful skeleton!

Favorite Thing #11 – Marbles

• Because like people and snow, each one is uniquely not quite like the other
• Because the colors are bright and happy and have infinite patterns
• Because I even like the imperfect ones that have little bubbles of air in them
• Because I used to lie in bed wondering how marbles are made
• Because you can actually play games with them that doesn’t involve batteries, a keyboard or a wand
• Because they make a nice sound when you click them against each other
• Because you get an instant cheap but artsy centerpiece when you put a bunch of marbles inside a glass jar

Favorite Thing #10 – Ice Cubes

• Because when I was a child, I was so fascinated with the miracle of how water could be liquid and solid and gas, simply by a rearrangement of the molecules. Science at work!
• Because each one is a little work of art – have you ever tried freezing ice cubes with stuff inside them? Or adding coloring to the water, then freezing? Magic!
• Because adding ice cubes to any drink makes it taste better (especially during the summer!)
• Because it is fun to munch on ice
• Because brain freeze! No explanation needed…
• Because for once in your life, you have to try tipping a trayful of ice cubes down your shirt or your pants. Try it before you die 😉
• Because sucking on ice helps when you are queasy

Favorite Thing #9 – Hot (Bubble) Bath

• Because there is nothing more relaxing than sinking into the soothing warmth of a bubble bath
• Because it makes me feel sexy (especially when you place the bubbles strategically!)
• Because splashing the foamy bubbles are fun (at any age)!
• Because when you submerge your head underwater, you can play a game of ‘how long can you hold your breath’
• Because my skin feels so soft and silky afterwards
• Because I smell so good afterwards
• Because it can double as aromatherapy if you add some herbal scents

Favorite Thing #8 – New Spiral Notebook

• Because the pages are clean and new and crisp, and has that new notebook smell
• Because I can stack them on top of each other, neat as can be
• Because I want to fill the empty pages with my thoughts
• Because I can also doodle and write down any nonsense when I have no particularly deep thoughts
• Because it’s so easy to rip pages out and make paper airplanes
• Because there are so many varieties of covers – plain, patterned, colored, sky’s the limit
• Because I can feel my imagination coming alive just itching to personalize the notebook
• Because it’s okay to close it, set it aside and let it collect dust – it will still be there when inspiration strikes

Favorite Thing #7 – The Day I Was Free of My Braces

• Because I finally had a smile that did not have a metallic shine or neon-colored bands!
• Because I could finally make-out without worrying about causing mortal injury
• Because I was sick of my dentist at that point (But very grateful for my smile!)
• Because my dad no longer had a constant reminder for how much he was shelling out for my dental needs
• Because I could finally eat extra crunchy stuff without risking an unscheduled visit to the dentist (and a lecture)
• Because I loved my new perfect smile! With extra confidence!
• Because I could finally stop fretting about food that get stuck in the braces
